Chapter Three

The singing bowl led them through Austin, throwing up red sparks whenever it felt like it. Emily kept the mallet moving around the rim, occasionally reaching out for Nickie’s hand and the extra boost of magic brought by the Hadstrom sisters’ contact.

When they got to Red River Street, the tracker’s red bursts of light switched to orange, then bright yellow.

Emily squinted through her window, looking for magical explosions or unhinged Peabrain spells firing off without warning. A week ago, that would’ve been a sure sign of the gorafrex inside its human host. Now, though, magic was a headache for everyone. “Feels like we were just here.”

“Because we were.” Nickie pointed through her sister’s window. “Brightwing Emporium.”

“Oh, yeah. The fairy’s apothecary. Hey, look, his lights are on. Think he’s seen anything—” The singing bowl in Emily’s lap shot off yellow and white sparks.

“Is it supposed to do that?” Nathan asked from the back seat, leaning forward.

“I don’t know.”

“What’s going on, Em?”

“Wait.” Emily fluttered her hand toward her sister. “Pull over.”

“Why’s it doing that?”

Nickie slowed and moved to the curb. Emily was no longer making the singing bowl sing, but the magical tracking device apparently had other plans. With a sigh, Nickie drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and watched the sparks. “Please tell me it’s not broken too.”

“Hey, if it is, it wasn’t me.” Emily spread her arms and stared at the bowl of fireworks in her lap. “White and yellow. That means we’re close, right?”

“It’s supposed to.” Nickie leaned away from her sister and the exploding bowl. “But they’re not giving us a direction.”

“Still, that helps us narrow it down to—oh. Nope.” Emily knocked the mallet against the side of the bowl a few times. “Come on.”

Now the bowl spat orange and red sparks too, all four colors flying in every direction. Some of them whizzed through the back of the car past Nathan’s head and disappeared behind them. The orange sparks shot straight up through the car’s roof, and Emily craned her neck as if she could see past a few feet above her. “Well, I know Laura’s not in the sky.”

“So, this obviously isn’t the normal MO for that thing,” Nathan added.

“Ya think?” Nickie glanced at the rearview mirror and caught the professor’s gaze. When he shrugged, she added, “Sorry.”

“Don’t be. This is frustrating.”

“Hold on, guys.” Emily stared at the sparking bowl, which was starting to calm down and only spat a few bright motes instead of an explosion. “I can get this thing to work. Maybe it just needs another boost.”

“Or maybe we need one of your potions to get it back on track.”

Emily wrinkled her nose. “I can use a potion to do the same thing as a spell. Hopefully. But as far as I know, nothing I mix up’s gonna make magic do its job again. Not sure how that works with tracking artifacts.”

Nathan cleared his throat and tried not to stare too hard at the group of college-aged kids dressed up as superheroes walking down the sidewalk on Red River.
